Bill Lundberg

"Swimmer,"

a film sculpture by Bill Lundberg was donated to the Blanton Museum of the University at Texas in 2008 by John A. Robertson in memory of Carlota S. Smith. The work will be exhibited in the Blanton from May 2 through August 30, 2009 and previewed on Friday, May 1 for "B Scene," the Blanton's monthly art party.
Guy Brett wrote about this installation:"Projected onto the floor in the vicinity of wall-hung paintings in amuseum, Swimmer (1975) creates, with great wit and economy of means, a confrontation between two spaces, art gallery and swimming pool; two media, water and film; and two orientations, the vertical (the viewer) and the horizontal (the swimmer). So elemental are these confrontations that one cannot easily decide if the swimmer in his rectangle of water is a metaphor or freedom or entrapment."
Lundberg created this seminal work while living in London in the early 1970s, filming it from scaffolding built over a residential pool. A painter by training, Lundberg is considered a forefather of film and video installation.The "Swimmer" was premiered at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London in 1975. Digitalized and converted to video, this pioneer film-installation creates the illusion of a water-based environment. The sounds of splashing water fill the darkened gallery, and the image of a man treading water is cast onto the floor. Placing more emphasis on image, rather than dialogue or explanatory text-a practice typical in Lundberg's work-the artist sets up an open space for the viewer to construct a narrative about the swimmer based on their own interpretations and experiences.
With works in important collections and a career of numerous international shows Lundberg is the head of the Transmedia Program which he founded at the University of Texas, Austin.

A obra estará em exposição no Blanton de 2 de maio até 30 de agosto de 2009 e terá uma inauguração na sexta-feira, dia 1º de maio. Abaixo, um testemunho de Guy Brett sobre esta obra:"Projetado no piso, próximo aos quadros dependurados numa parede de museu, "O Nadador" (1975) cria, com grande inteligência e economia de recursos, um confronto entre dois espaços, a galeria de arte e a piscina; duas mídias, a água e o filme; e duas orientações, a vertical (o espectador) e a horizontal (o nadador). Tão fundamentais são essas confrontações que fica difícil decidir se o nadador, em seu retângulo de água, é uma metáfora de liberdade ou de confinamento."
Lundberg criou este trabalho seminal quando morava em Londres, no inicio dos anos 70, filmando a partir de um andaime construído sobre uma piscina particular. Pintor por formação, Lundberg é considerado um dos precursores da arte da filme-instalação e video-instalação.
"Swimmer" (O Nadador) foi montado pela primeira vez no Institute of Contemporary Arts de Londres, em 1975. Digitalizada e convertida para vídeo, esta obra pioneira cria a ilusão de um ambiente aquático. Os sons de água respingando enche a penumbra da galeria, e a imagem de um homem nadando é projetada no chão. Pondo mais ênfase na imagem que no diálogo ou no texto explanatório - prática bem típica no trabalho de Bill - o artista estabelece um espaço aberto para o espectador construir uma narrativa sobre o "Swimmer" (O Nadador), baseada em suas próprias interpretações e experiências.Com obras em coleções importantes e uma carreira com inúmeras exposições internacionais, Lundberg é diretor do Programa de Transmídia, que ele mesmo criou para a Universidade do Texas, em Austin.
